A fuel card is a payment card designed specifically for fleet diesel purchases at commercial truck stops and fuel networks. Unlike a general credit card, a fuel card provides per-driver purchase controls, itemized fuel reporting, network-negotiated diesel discounts, and statements formatted for IFTA reporting.

Fuel card language should be checked against the pump receipt, card controls, discount method, network location, and statement. The advertised discount is not the whole calculation.

Why it matters in trucking

For carriers running multiple trucks, a fuel card creates visibility and control that a cash or credit card arrangement cannot match. The office can see exactly what each driver bought, where, and when — and can block non-fuel purchases, set gallon limits, or restrict to specific networks.
